According to Statistics Canada, Cancer is or will likely soon be the leading cause of death in Canada.
Here are some important facts about Cancer:
- In Canada, in the year 2009, an estimated 171,000 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed and 73,500 deaths will occur due to cancer. This means 470 Canadians per day will be diagnosed with cancer. This is an increase of 4,600 diagnoses and 1,500 deaths from 2008.
- World Health Organization has estimated that by 2030 the rates of cancer will have doubled globally.
Much research has been made about the Genetic or hereditary factors of cancer development. While many cancers run in certain families there are very few cancers that are truly genetic or hereditary in origin. Research from the past 80 years has shown clearly that most cancers (estimates as high as 80%) are not genetic, but rather caused by environmental factors.
So how does it break down? In the figure below you can see what percentage of cancers can be attributed to a particular risk factor.
At MCNE naturopathic doctors can evaluate factors in your environment that may be contributing to an increased risk for developing cancer. We will then create a strategy that could reduce your risk of developing cancer in many cases by over 50%.
