All MCNE lectures over the past two years have received excellent ratings and an average of 4.7 out of 5 (for content and delivery) by attendees.

Integrative Oncology

Mistletoe In Integrative Oncology: 1 Day Intensive Session

European Mistletoe (Viscum Album) is the most commonly used non-conventional therapy in Europe. It is also the most well researched botanical in cancer with well over 1,000 published papers. Viscum Album has four key effects that are important for its therapeutic success. First, it has strong, non-specific immune modulating effects that lead to increases in both number and activity of circulating immune cells. Second, It has been shown to support conventional therapies like chemotherapy in radiation by reducing severity and rates of adverse drug reactions. Third, it has strong neuroendocrine effects leading to normalization of cortisol curves and positively affecting melatonin levels. Fourth, it has strong apoptic affects leading to malignant cell death and, when applied properly, rapid clinical tumor responses. In this workshop we will introduce the scientific underpinnings of mistletoe therapy along with describing the art of applying mistletoe in clinical practice. Topics will include initial patient assessment (as it relates to Viscum Album), proper dose escalation, modes of administration, patient monitoring and introduction of protocols for dealing with adverse reactions.

Target Audience: Doctors currently working with or intending to work with cancer patients not familiar with European Mistletoe or Doctors who have worked with European Mistletoe but want to learn nuances of prescribing and innovative methods of administration like intravenous applications.

Cancer Surveillance and Early Diagnosis for Naturopathic Doctors

Cancer is now the leading cause of death in North America. Statistics show that 1 in 2 men and 2 in 5 women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Despite recent advances in treatment of various cancers mortality overall has not changed drastically over the past 10 years. The mainstay of successful cancer care is early diagnosis and rapid treatment. Having said that recommendations for screening for cancers like breast, prostate, colorectal, lung, etc. have changed tremendously over the past few years. It is difficult for primary care providers to keep up with these changes and provide accurate advice to patients. In this seminar we will review disease epidemiology, risk assessment, the current recommendations for screening and early diagnosis along with a naturopathic perspective for the following cancers:

Breast Cancer
Cervical Cancer
Colorectal Cancer
Lung Cancer
Prostate Cancer

Patients often are not being properly screened with over or under screening rampant in family medicine. Learn how patient risk evaluation can modify screening frequency. Ensure your patients are being checked up properly at the correct frequency based on sound evidence.

Target Audience: All naturopathic doctors even those not practicing as a primary care provider who are not familiar with current screening guidelines.

Course Fees
Professionals: $80
Students: $40

Introduction to Naturopathic Oncology

Cancer is a global epidemic. While age adjusted rates of cancer are stable or on the decline in North America total cancer cases are on a consistent rise. In Canada, like the rest of the world, mortality rates have seen a modest 4% improvement over the past decade. Much of these improvements can be attributed to early diagnosis and not treatment advances. More needs to be done and naturopathic interventions have a great potential to provide support for cancer patients to improve both tolerability and efficacy of standard cancer care. The goal for this seminar is to provide naturopathic doctors with a solid background in oncology science and treatment of patients with cancer using naturopathic principles

Topics will include:

• Fundamental aspects in tumour biology and carcinogenesis
• Patient risk assessment and focused treatment plans aimed to reduce cancer risk by up to 80%
• The basics of screening tests and the latest recommendations for the most commonly diagnosed cancers
• What are the common diagnostic tests for the detection, confirmation of diagnosis and ongoing patient evaluation
• Emerging diagnostics in the field of oncology including: circulating tumour cells, PET Scans, and chemosensitivity testing
• What treatments are most commonly offered for patients undergoing conventional treatment and what are their side effects and expected benefits
• Evaluating the treatment goals and therapeutic aim for cancer patients
• Evidence based and traditional natural treatment options (clinical nutrition, acupuncture and Chinese medicine, botanical medicines, salves] aimed at reducing chemotherapy side effects and promoting treatment efficacy
• To determine the most effective diet therapy in cancer patients for a variety of therapeutic situations

Case studies will be reviewed to provide concrete examples of therapeutic protocols
